Scientists report that Ibuprofen has health risks similar to those reported for Bextra, Ibuprofen Found to Increase High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) Risk
Researchers may have discovered a problem with many over-the-counter pain relievers. A new study finds women who
take higher doses of Ibuprofen, found in Advil and Motrin, and Acetaminophen, found in Tylenol, are more likely to have high
blood pressure. Of the popular over-the-counter pain relievers, only aspirin did not increase blood pressure. Researchers
say the finding adds to evidence that all painkillers, prescription and non-prescription, carry risks.
From the Children's Medical Center Dallas:
Ibuprofen lawsuit serves as reminder for parents A citizen petition filed on Tuesday, Feb. 15, in Washington urges the government
to
require warning labels on ibuprofen products, such as Advil, Motrin and
Aleve. The
petition claims that ibuprofen can cause two potentially fatal reactions:
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
From the Holistic Pediatric Association:
The rare disorder known as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) has been recognized as
an
adverse effect of Motrin (ibuprofen) since the 1980s. At that time Motrin was a
prescription only drug and it included a warning of this risk. From the Globe and Mail, July 8, 2005:
An independent panel that reviewed the safety of cox-2 painkillers for Health
Canada is
calling for the return of the controversial drug Vioxx -- and sounding an
unexpected alarm
about the heart risks of an old and popular pain reliever, ibuprofen...Most
notably, the
panel calls for the over-the-counter pain reliever ibuprofen -- which is sold
under names
such as Motrin and Advil -- to be moved behind the counter so pharmacists can
discuss with
customers the risk of cardiovascular side effects before they buy it....
Celebrex and Vioxx. This may lead to removal of OTC status for the drug, as well
as one or more class-action lawsuits.
From WLNS News, August 16, 2005:
The petition was prompted by a lawsuit filed on Jan. 21 by New Jersey parents on
behalf of
their daughter who was diagnosed with TEN last year and treated for burns over
70 percent
of her body. TEN is a severe skin reaction, often preceded by SJS, which causes
mucous
lesions and blistering over as much as 30 percent of the body. TEN causes extensive
blistering and peeling of the skin, much like that suffered by burn victims.
From Consumer Affairs online, July 10, 2005, in an article about the possible resumption of Vioxx sales in Canada:
Note: All trademarks belong to their owners....The agency [Health Canada, Canada's equivalent to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration] said it acknowledges the panel's view that, as a group, selective COX-2 inhibitors are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, a risk that is similar to those associated with most non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), a category that includes other COX-2 drugs as well as ibuprofen and other popular pain relievers. The panel noted that this risk is present for all patients taking anti-inflammatory agents and that it increases with longer-term use and when other risk factors, such as cardiovascular disease, are present.....
